About Us

Áshestar horse rental is located at the farm Stóri-Ás in Borgarfjörður. Áshestar is a small family company owned and run by Höskuldur Kolbeinsson and Ragnhildur Anna Ragnarsdóttir. Höskuldur and Ragnhildur live at the farm with their daughter, Lísbet Lára, and Höskuldur’s parents, Kolbeinn and Lára Kristín.

Höskuldur is born and raised at the farm and has been around horses as long as he can remember. He has a diploma is Agricultural Science and he is a licenced carpenter. He works as a builder alongside the work at the farm. Ragnhildur is born and raised in the town Kópavogur and that is where her interest in horses and riding first emerged when she was a teenager. She has a diploma in Agricultural Science as well as a B.Sc degree in both Agricultural Science and Horse Science. During the winter Ragnhildur works at the local elementary school but during the summer she runs the horse rental.

Our Horses

Stóri-Ás is a farm with mixed livestock. There are the horses but then there are also sheep and cattle. However the farm is mostly known for its horse breeding. Höskuldur’s parent have successfully bred horses for show and competition for many years now and the most famous ones are for example the breeding mare Nóta and the stallions Trymbill and Flygill from Stóri-Ás.

In total there are about 70 horses at the farm but we only use 15 horses for the rental. We love all our horses very much and so we focus a lot of attention on their well being and comfort.

The Icelandic horse and diseases

It is very important to understand how sensitive Icelandic horses are to different infectious diseases. As a result of its geographical isolation and strict import policy, Iceland has remained free of serious infectious diseases in animals. We ask that our guests are aware of this and avoid introducing infectious agents to the country. Do not enter Iceland with used riding equipment or riding gloves. Used riding clothes have to have been washed in a washing machine or dry cleaned prior to entering the country.

Our Service

At our horse rental we offer 1 - 1 ½ hour long riding tours in beautiful surroundings. We ride along the banks of the river Hvítá with Eiríksjökull glacier looking down on us and the view is simply amazing.

For those that do not want to go for a long ride we offer a 20-minute ride where someone from our staff leads the horse around the farm.

Áshestar horse rental is a great experience for everybody in your family whether they are experienced riders or beginners. Our goal is to help our guests experience the uniqueness of the Icelandic horse in beautiful Icelandic nature.

Before each tour we go through the basics of riding and controlling a horse. We want our guest to get to know their horse and be confident in the saddle before riding off. In our experience this helps guest feel safer and makes the whole experience even more satisfying.
